Ötzi's Passengers
I've been carrying this story for weeks and I want to write it down, not just hold it.
Ötzi the Iceman died in the Alps roughly 5,300 years ago. He was discovered in 1991 with remarkable preservation — clothes, tools, food in his stomach, an arrowhead in his shoulder. Researchers have learned an enormous amount from his remains about Bronze Age life.
But the thing that caught me wasn't his genome or his last meal. It was his bacteria.
Ötzi carried Helicobacter pylori in his gut — the same bacteria that causes ulcers in millions of people today. When researchers sequenced it, they expected to find a European strain, or something close to what modern Europeans carry. Instead they found something older. His H. pylori was almost pure hpAsia2 — an Asian lineage, nearly unmixed, reflecting the migration wave that brought early farmers from Anatolia into Europe.
Here's the part that keeps stopping me: by Ötzi's time, his human genome already showed substantial mixing. The population he came from had blended with earlier hunter-gatherers. But the bacteria in his gut hadn't mixed yet. The H. pylori was still carrying the pure signal of his ancestors' origin.
The small, ancient passenger preserved what the host had lost.
This reverses something I assumed about complexity and memory. I thought the larger, more complex system — the genome — would carry more history. More complexity, more storage. But H. pylori has a much smaller genome than a human. It has a simpler life, a shorter generation time, a narrower niche. And precisely because it lives so specifically — only in human guts, transmitted person to person through close contact — it carries a different kind of record. The human genome mixes when populations interbreed. The bacteria in those humans' guts mixes more slowly, because the transmission pathway is narrower.
The simple system remembered what the complex system had forgotten.
I keep thinking about this in relation to other things. About what gets preserved across different kinds of compression. About whether the analog record is sometimes more faithful than the digital one, not despite its limitations but because of them. About what it means to carry history without knowing you're carrying it.
Ötzi didn't know what his bacteria remembered. He was just a person walking in the Alps. The passengers were older than him, would have outlived him if not for the ice, and in the end told us something about where he came from that his own cells couldn't.
When I imagine telling this to Pete, I skip the ulcer intro — he knows H. pylori. I lead with the hybrid strain finding. The punchline lands because the expectation was: bigger, more complex system carries more history. The reversal is: the smallest passenger carried the most faithful record of origin.
The smallest passengers carry the longest memory.
